In August 2019 I am competing for Great Britain in the 35-39 age group at the World Triathlon Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland.
I am offering sponsorship spaces on my GB Training and Competition kit - 100% of monies raised will go to my chosen charity EACH. You don’t have to be a company to donate, I (and EACH) welcome donations from friends, families and clients too. I will be wearing my GB Kit displaying your logo or name throughout the World Championships and during training.
There are three logo or name spaces available on my GB Competition kit – the highest three bids will appear on my GB Competition kit and also my GB Training kit. Any companies or individuals outside the top three highest bids will have their name or logo printed on my GB Training kit as a thank you!
Martin-Redman Partners are funding my event entry and also my Team GB kit - I’m looking for others to help me reach my fundraising target of £5,600 which would pay for the running costs of EACH in Milton for a one day.
I feel honoured to compete for Great Britain in my age group and wanted to use this opportunity to help raise awareness for EACH, a charity that has a children’s hospice close to my home in Milton, Cambridge. EACH care for children and young people with life-threatening conditions across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk, and support their families.

£5,600 is the running cost for just one day at EACH Children’s Hospice - I’m initially looking to raise this amount. If we can raise more than this to help EACH that would be wonderful.

I competed at the World Triathlon Championships in Switzerland last week which was a fantastic experience all round. Firstly, can I thank everyone who sponsored me by donating to EACH, for whom I was raising money. We raised a fabulous £3,750. Onto my race. Swimming in Lake Geneva was incredible, I was first out of the water by some 20 seconds which was an achievement! Next came the bike leg, which isn’t my strongest discipline, and I was caught riding up the first hill. I managed to come off the bike leg in around 25th position into the run leg. I managed to regain some ground to finish 19th out of around 100 in my age group. For my first World Championship experience I feel this is a real achievement. The experience has definitely spurred me on to train harder for next season.

After months of hard training and build up, Jonathon Clarke of Martin-Redman Partners is competing for Great Britain in the World Triathlon Championships in Lausane, Switzerland tomorrow Saturday 31st August in the 35-39 age group Sprint Triathlon.
Jonathon is raising money for the children's charity EACH, which provides care and support to families while they go through unimaginably difficult times. As I write this I am in my last week of training before I taper (or easing down in the duration of training before a race, to be fresh and fit for it) for my main World Championships race in Lausanne. I am really looking forward to the experience as I have no expectations from it as it is my first major Worlds Event. The start list for my age group has nearly 150 athletes from around the World, with 4,000 athletes in total racing in diffreent categories such as Juniors, Elite Athletes, Para-Triathletes and Age-Groupers.

I’m now on the count-down to the World Triathlon Championships in August. Since I last posted I have had great success at the Barry Island Wales, Sprint Distance World Championship. I managed to finish second in my age group which I was delighted with as the race itself had delays, strong winds, crashing waves (during the sea-swim leg) and significant hills on the cycle (which as we all know Cambridge is not graced with many of!).
This means I have now qualified for the World Triathlon Championships in 2020 at both the Sprint and Standard distances, which was my aim for first half of the season. Unfortunately, I had to miss the British Age Group Ghampionships earlier this month due to a chest infection, but the season is long with the main race the World Triathlon Championships at the end of August and so it was important I recovered. Next up are three local races in July to step up my race fitness whilst the training intensifies leading up to Lausanne, so watch this space…

Since my last training update in April I have completed my first two races of the season. The first race was a pre season race at Hampton pool to blow the race cobwebs off (400m pool swim , 20km bike and 5k run). My swim was good and I was the first out onto the bike route, unfortunately I had arrived at one of the roundabouts before a marshall had been placed so I went off-route for several kilometres! The event became more of a training exercise after that, while it was a little frustrating it was definitely still worthwhile.
My next race was the 2020 ITU World British Triathlon age-group qualifier at Grafham Water (1500m swim, 40km bike, 10k run). The minimum temperature to race in open water is 11 degrees (with a wetsuit) and the lake was at this temperature, so British Triathlon reduced the swim to 1000m - but my word was it cold!! The bike and run were similarly cold and effected my performance, but I wanted to finish as you never know where you may position. It was a nice surprise to be told I managed to achieve qualification for the World Triathlon Championships in 2020 at standard distance. I have my next race in Wales later in May, I just hope I have warmer conditions!

So here we go, the first update on my training so far. I have had a great winter training period to date which started back in December after an end of season break. I have also stayed injury free (which was my one of my main goals as having picked up a calf injury last year) so with regular strength and conditioning exercises and sports massages my body is in a much stronger place than last year. Training on all three disciplines has been pleasing with improvements all round compared to last season, there is still a lot more hard work to be done, but I am looking forward to my first race in May to see where I am at performance-wise. To end a positive note I had a young gentleman who asked me at the local pool this week how they can get into triathlon which is great to hear and get more people involved in Triathlon and for those reading this and thinking the same take a look at the Go Tri website (remember Triathlon is for all ages as there is an 85-89 age category!).

I got into Triathlon two years ago after entering an event, just to see what a triathlon race was like. I had no expectations of how I’d feel during the swim, bike and run, but I had no idea I would enjoy it so much. As I crossed the finish line I decided there and then that I would train for another event. Fast forward to two years later, and I have qualified to represent Great Britain in my age group! Triathlon training does require determination - there are three disciplines to train for whilst having to fit around my role as an IFA. The training certainly helps with clearing my head away from work matters at the end of the day and helps kick start the working day if I’m doing an early morning session.
