Independent Protection Advice

Life cover and other forms of protection insurance (critical illness and income protection) are bought on the basis that they protect you and your loved ones from the financial impact of an unexpected injury, serious illness or premature death.

Financial protection will ensure any outstanding debts are repaid, household bills can be met, and dependent family members are financially provided for into the future, should the unexpected happen.

Our Independent Financial Advisers will fully assess your circumstances and needs, and thereafter recommend the most suitable cover for you and your family, considering the below factors:

  • Any dependents; whether they be a non-working spouse, children or elderly relatives and how long they are likely to be financially dependent on you

  • Any debts, mortgages or other liabilities you and your spouse have

  • The correct type of insurance for your needs – is this life cover, critical illness cover or income protection?

  • The ‘sum assured’ (how much cover you need)

  • The term (how long you need cover for)

  • The ‘life(s) assured’ (should cover be on a single or joint life basis? If a joint life plan should this pay out on first or second death?)

  • Premium type – guaranteed or reviewable?

  • Indexation options

  • Should the policy be placed into Trust?

Independent Protection Advice

We provide independent protection advice on the following products:

  • Life Cover - this is the simplest and cheapest form of protection, with the policy paying out if you die within your chosen policy term. There are various types of term assurance policies available that pay out a level (fixed amount), decreasing or increasing lump sum.

Another option is a ‘family income benefit’ plan – designed to pay a level or increasing monthly income to your dependants. Policies typically cover individuals from the ages of 18 to 89, with most insurers stating that the policy must end before you reach your 90th birthday.

  • Critical Illness Cover - will provide you with a tax-free ‘lump sum’ if you are diagnosed with a serious medical condition within the policy term. Comprehensiveness of cover varies between different insurers, but a typical critical illness policy will cover in the region of 50 conditions; examples being stroke, heart attack, cancer and conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis.

  • Income Protection - will pay a regular percentage of your pre-disability earnings if you are unable to work through injury or illness. The payments will be made until you are able to return to work, your selected retirement age or the end of the policy term, whichever is sooner.

Income Protection is medically underwritten when you apply for cover, so you know exactly what is and is not covered before your policy starts, giving you peace of mind that if you need to claim, your policy will pay out when you need it. (Please note; Income Protection should not be confused with the much-publicised Accident, Sickness or Unemployment/Payment Protection Insurance).

  • Whole-of-Life Cover - will pay a lump sum when you die, whenever that is, covering you for your whole life, unlike term assurance policies which have to end by the time you are 90. As the policy will pay out, no matter what age you die, the premiums are more expensive than term assurance policies for the same level of cover

How we provide protection advice:

Our independent advice status means we search the wide protection marketplace, analysing a large number of Insurers and policies, to provide you with impartial advice on policy features and cost. This ensures you arrange the best policy, with the best provider according to your needs and budget. When we make a recommendation to you we will consider the Insurers:

  • Statistics on payouts; what percentage they have paid and declined

  • Underwriting policy

  • Financial status and reliability

  • Standard exclusions they add to their contracts which you should be aware of

Should you need to claim on a policy that we have arranged we will help you manage the claims process and provide advice and administration support as part of our comprehensive service.
